–In this overview of the Middle East, reaching as far back as the foundation of Islam in the seventh century, the history of the region is analyzed in a clear narrative. A History of the Modern Middle East also contains an in-depth bibliography on Palestine and other nations in the region.

— Michael J. Cohen concisely summarizes and examines both the causes and transformation of the Arab-Zionist conflict in this book. The book was published, however, in 1987, so over twenty years of the conflict are missing.

— This book is a very complete analysis of the history of the Arab-Israeli conflict. It spans the entire military history of Israel until 2004.

Gelvin, James L. The Israel-Palestine Conflict: One Hundred Years of War. New York: Cambridge
      University Press, 2005.
— James Gelvin wrote The Israel-Palestine Conflict: One Hundred Years of War as an analysis of the conflict between native Palestinians and their Israeli counterparts. While the book obviously discusses the influence of the Arab league, it focuses more on the geopolitics of Israel.

The Palestine-Israel Conflict: A Basic Introduction is a great basic, chronological overview of the Arab-Israeli conflict.

Pappe, Ilan. A History of Modern Palestine: One Land, Two Peoples. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press,

2004.

–Focusing on the the history of Palestine from the nineteenth century onward, Pappe covers the changes in policy as the area became more volatile after the creation of the state of Israel. Known for his criticism of Israel’s policies toward the Palestinians, A History of Modern Palestine will offer a different perspective on the period.

Rowley, Gwyn. Israel into Palestine. London: Mansell Publishing Limited, 1984.

–Rowley’s Israel into Palestine begins with the Classical period, and carries through European Zionism into the 1980s.

–An analysis of the Arab-Israeli conflict from a Palestinian refugee perspective.
